Sedimentary basins represent some of Earth's most economically and scientifically important geological systems. Major examples include the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico (USA), the Mesopotamian Basin of Iraq, the Levant Basin of the Eastern Mediterranean, the North Sea Basin between the United Kingdom and Norway, and the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
This paper evaluates basin systems as components of a broader geological network rather than as isolated structural features. Observable constraints include basin geometry, continuity length, sediment accumulation potential, structural confinement, boundary relationships, and regional geological coherence.
Particular attention is given to how basin systems occupy recurring positions relative to mountain belts, structural gradients, continental margins, and major geological boundaries.
The objective is to determine whether basin systems exhibit repeatable network characteristics when compared across continents, tectonic settings, and depositional environments.
For institutional, resource-sector, and exploration audiences, basin-network analysis provides a measurable framework for comparing geological systems using publicly available geological, seismic, stratigraphic, and geospatial datasets.
