Geological Transition Zone Framework

Paper 220 of 383
Published June 1, 2026

Geological transition zones mark where one structural, depositional, or tectonic system gives way to another. These zones often preserve valuable information because multiple processes interact within a constrained region.

This framework evaluates transition zones through structural gradients, basin-margin relationships, deformation boundaries, lithologic changes, fault continuity, and regional persistence.

Reference systems include the Levant-Arabian transition, Mesopotamian-Zagros boundary, Himalayan foreland, East African Rift margins, and continental-oceanic margin systems.

The objective is to establish a repeatable method for identifying and comparing geological transition zones across different environments.

Within ABC Sequencing, transition zones help clarify how larger geological corridors remain coherent even as local systems change expression.

The framework remains cautious: transitions are not treated as proof of continuity, but as places where continuity can be tested carefully.
