Every archive possesses limits.

The planet existed before the investigation began.

The planet will continue after the investigation ends.

The archive is larger.

It has always been larger.

It will remain larger.

Throughout Earth: Day Zero, one principle appeared repeatedly.

The geological record is incomplete.

Entire oceans have disappeared.

Continents have reorganized.

Mountain systems have been reduced to sediment.

Basins have been buried, uplifted, deformed, and erased.

Crust has been recycled.

Archives have been fragmented.

Information has been lost.

The incompleteness of the record is unavoidable.

Yet incompleteness never rendered the archive useless.

Quite the opposite.

The remarkable observation emerging from centuries of geological investigation is that partial records remain extraordinarily informative.

Earth does not preserve everything.

Future investigators will almost certainly construct better models.
