What Survived?
The central challenge of geological reconstruction is not interpretation.
The central challenge is survival.
Before any observation can be measured, verified, modeled, or understood, something must first remain.
Earth is a dynamic system. Mountains rise and erode. Basins fill and deform. Continents separate and collide. Oceans open and close. Entire biological worlds emerge and disappear.
Yet despite this constant change, portions of Earth's history survive.
Survival in Geological Systems
Earth does not preserve every event equally.
Many individual events vanish almost completely.
What frequently survives are larger organizational relationships:
- Structural frameworks
- Crustal boundaries
- Basin architecture
- Mineral systems
- Lithospheric domains
- Geophysical signatures
- Topographic expressions
The survival of these relationships creates the possibility of reconstruction.
