Defining the Entrance Domain
The Earth: Day Zero framework proposes the existence of a candidate entrance domain associated with the hypothesized impact pathway.
Before evaluating specific geographic locations, the concept itself must be defined.
What Is An Entrance Domain?
An entrance domain is a spatial region hypothesized to preserve the earliest large-scale signatures associated with an incoming planetary-scale forcing event.
The domain is not defined by a single feature. Instead, it is defined by a collection of geometric, structural, and geophysical relationships that collectively satisfy entrance-domain criteria.
Required Characteristics
A viable entrance domain should exhibit some combination of:
- appropriate spatial scale;
- geometric coherence;
- compatibility with a proposed great-circle reconstruction;
- consistency with energetics explored later in the framework;
- survivability across geological time.
These criteria are intentionally general. Specific thresholds will be refined in later papers.
Candidate Versus Confirmed
Earth: Day Zero treats all entrance domains as candidates until they survive constraint testing.
The purpose of the framework is not to assume success but to determine whether any domain can satisfy the required conditions more effectively than competing alternatives.
The Antarctic Hypothesis
The framework eventually evaluates Antarctica, and specifically East Antarctica, as a candidate entrance domain.
That evaluation requires several intermediate papers defining geometry, scale, ordering, and falsifiability before any conclusion can be considered.
The next stage of the series develops the complementary geometric objects required to complete the reconstruction framework.
