The Dead Sea Basin spanning Israel, Jordan, and Palestine and the Levant Basin of the Eastern Mediterranean adjacent to Israel, Lebanon, Cyprus, and Egypt represent two distinct but geographically related sedimentary systems.
This paper evaluates both basins through measurable geological constraints including basin geometry, sediment-thickness distribution, structural confinement, accommodation-space development, continuity relationships, and basin-margin architecture.
The Dead Sea Basin is characterized by strong topographic confinement, significant vertical relief, and localized sediment accumulation within the Dead Sea Rift system. In contrast, the Levant Basin occupies a broad offshore setting with extensive sedimentary packages and marine basin-fill development.
Particular attention is given to the transition between continental and offshore environments and the structural relationships that connect regional basin systems across the Eastern Mediterranean.
The objective is to determine whether recurring organizational characteristics can be identified when confined continental basins are compared directly against adjacent offshore sedimentary systems.
