Abstract

Hydrocarbon accumulations represent the successful preservation of multiple geological conditions through time.

Source rocks, migration pathways, reservoir intervals, trapping mechanisms, and seal integrity must all remain sufficiently intact for accumulation to occur.

This paper evaluates hydrocarbon concentration as an expression of geological memory.

Hydrocarbon systems preserve evidence of multiple successful geological processes acting in sequence through deep time.

The resulting accumulations may therefore be viewed as concentrated expressions of geological memory.
